Shinto Period is from the end of Momoyama-era (Keicho慶長 1596~1615) until middle Edo-era (Anei-era安永 1781). After 1615, Makuri-tetsu まくり鉄 (the lowest quality iron) was used for a long time and it turned vulgar swords.

Umetada Myoju埋忠明寿 devised a new process for crafting hagane steel of high quality. His idea was called Mizuheshi水へし. There were Kunihiro (堀川國広) and Tadayoshi (肥前 忠吉) as his famous disciples in Shitnto Period.
